The spec ChargeBite actually encodes

I run ChargeBite. The India passport preset is not a US 2×2 crop with the canvas stretched. It writes a 630×810 px JPEG, which is 35×45 mm at 300 DPI, and walks JPEG quality until the file sits in a 10–250 KB window when the photo allows it. Encoding stays on your phone. We do not upload the portrait, and we do not submit it to Passport Seva for you.

• JPEG, colour, sRGB as the browser encodes it
• Plain white background in the crop — we do not auto-replace a gray wall
• 10–250 KB when the source has enough simple area to compress

Print shops still talk in millimetres. The upload form talks in pixels and kilobytes. If you hand a 35×45 mm paper print to a scanner set to “2×2 inch,” Seva sees a square. That is the first failure mode this page exists to stop.

Why Passport Seva still rejects a 630×810 JPEG

A correct pixel box is necessary and not sufficient. Seva’s software and a human checker both look at the picture. ChargeBite cannot pass those checks for you. Typical rejects after a “perfect size” export:

1. Background is not plain white. An off-white wall, a curtain, a shadow under the chin, or a gradient from a ring light reads as “coloured background.” The India photo tool does not run a cutout. If the wall is gray, useWhite Backgroundfirst, then crop — or reshoot.
2. Face does not fill the frame. A distant selfie with a huge white ceiling fails even at 630×810. Zoom until the head and shoulders occupy most of the dashed guide. Too tight (forehead cropped) also fails.
3. US 2×2 padded into 630×810. Stretching a square or letterboxing it with white bars keeps the wrong head geometry. Start from a 3:4 capture.
4. File over 250 KB. A 12 MP phone JPEG dropped in without our export can sit at 2–4 MB. Use the tool’s export, not “Save as” from Photos. If our export is still over the cap, the crop is too busy — step back from patterned clothes or use even lighting.
5. File under 10 KB. An already-tiny WhatsApp forward, compressed twice, looks like a stamp. Seva’s lower bound exists. Reshoot; do not upscale.
6. HEIC or PNG. iPhone default is HEIC. Many Indian portals only parse .jpg. The preset exports JPEG on purpose.
7. Glasses glare, red-eye, beauty mode, filters. Flash on lenses, smoothed skin, and animal-ear stickers are automatic rejects. Daylight, no flash.
8. Studio imprint, date, or a second person. A photo of a printed booth photo includes the lab’s footer. Infants with a parent in frame fail adult applications.

Step-by-step on ChargeBite

1. Stand about a metre from a plain white wall. Face a window. No flash. Neutral expression. Ears visible if you do not wear a religious covering.
2. OpenIndia passport photo— that URL locks the 630×810 preset. You can also pick it onall India sizes.
3. Take a portrait with the on-page camera, or drop an existing JPEG/PNG/WebP.
4. Drag zoom and pan so the dashed box cuts at the upper chest, not at the waist, and not through the hairline.
5. Export. On iOS Files or macOS Finder, confirm the JPEG is between 10 KB and 250 KB and named something the portal will accept (no .heic).
6. Read the current Passport Seva help page before you apply. Pixel rules have moved before. ChargeBite will not notice a new circular for you.

What this tool will not do

It will not talk to Passport Seva, book an appointment, or certify a photograph. It will not run a legal background replacement unless you use White Background as a separate, honest ML cutout. It will not magically pass a photo taken in a car, a club, or a yellow bedroom.Terms of usesay output is not a guarantee of portal acceptance. That sentence is here because people treat “630×810” as a promise. It is a crop.

White Background vs reshooting

If the wall is almost white but a shadow sits under the chin, reshoot. A cutout model will chew hair and glasses. UseWhite Backgroundonly when the backdrop is a busy room you cannot change. That job does upload ephemerally — unlike the India crop, which never leaves the phone. Do not run both in a loop hoping Seva will ignore a halo.

Children: Seva has a separate note for infants. A parent’s shoulder in the crop is a reject for adult booklets and sometimes required for a baby. Do not guess — read that year’s instruction. Pets, posters, and a car headrest in the background are not “plain white” even if you zoom. The dashed guide is a crop, not a content-aware fill.
